The USDA will focus on the distribution of heavy metals in consumables and monitor regulations on sausage, poultry, and more.
Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin recently announced an updated Memorandum of Understanding on agency cooperation to safeguard American consumers from heavy metals and other contaminants in food.
This agreement between the Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes collaboration through the National Residue Program for meat, poultry, and egg product regulation. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has already moved to update laboratory methods for measuring heavy metals in foods. FSIS will also expand monitoring of foods such as sausage and ready-made meals produced with a variety of ingredients from different locations.
“American farmers, ranchers, and producers grow and raise the safest, most abundant, and most affordable food supply in the world. Together with our partners at HHS and EPA, we are strengthening the health of American families and giving consumers confidence in the safety of our food supply,” said Secretary Rollins.
